Sapienza University offers numerous opportunities for study, research, and traineeships abroad, both within and outside Europe, ranging from short-term stays to longer periods, including thesis research abroad and much more.
Study periods in European countries: Erasmus+
Erasmus+ promotes transnational cooperation among higher education institutions. It funds student mobility for study purposes (SMS) across all disciplines and study levels (including doctoral level) and supports the academic recognition of studies within the European Higher Education Area.
The Erasmus+ programme allows students to attend courses and take examinations with full recognition in their academic record, or to carry out research activities for the preparation of their Bachelor’s, Master’s, or doctoral thesis.

Traineeships in European countries: Erasmus+ Traineeship
Erasmus+ traineeship mobility allows students to undertake internships at companies, training centres, or research institutions located in one of the participating countries.
The programme enables full-time traineeships abroad, recognised as an integral part of the study programme. The traineeship may also be carried out after graduation, provided that the selection process is completed before the award of the degree. The number of mobility months is cumulative with Erasmus study periods, up to the maximum allowed by the programme.

European Alliance CIVIS – “A European Civic University”
Sapienza University is a partner of the European Alliance CIVIS – “A European Civic University”, funded by the European Union and established together with the following universities:

The alliance has developed a wide range of joint study programmes across the 11 European campuses, with the aim of creating a genuine European Higher Education Area and contributing to the development of a strong, multilingual European knowledge society.
Training is research-based and includes innovative teaching activities that, in addition to traditional Erasmus mobility, also include short-term, virtual, and blended mobility formats.

Study periods in non-EU countries: Overseas Programme
Thanks to funding provided by the Italian Ministry of University and Research (MUR) and internal contributions, Sapienza University annually offers students the opportunity to spend a study period abroad, taking exams or conducting thesis research, at one of over 200 non-EU partner institutions with which bilateral agreements are in place.
The Overseas mobility programme provides a monthly grant of €700 (net) for the first 5 months and €500 (net) from the 6th month onwards. The stay abroad must be continuous, last at least 90 days, and may extend up to a maximum of two consecutive semesters. The grant may be awarded only once per study cycle and is not compatible with other Sapienza-funded scholarships.

Study or research periods in non-EU countries: Erasmus+ KA171 International Credit Mobility (ICM)
The Erasmus+ ICM programme, funded by the European Commission, enables students, doctoral candidates, and academic staff to carry out study, thesis research, teaching, or training periods in non-EU countries. It provides a scholarship and covers travel expenses.
All activities carried out abroad are fully recognised upon return, in accordance with the Learning Agreement approved by Sapienza academic staff.
Student mobility may last from a minimum of 3 to a maximum of 6 months (extendable up to 12 months, the last 6 months without a grant under a Zero-EU Grant scheme). The ICM scholarship also covers doctoral research mobility for the same duration.
Travel costs are calculated using the Distance Calculator based on the distance between the home institution city and the host institution city.

Degree Programme Activities
The Bachelor’s Degree in Applied Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence actively promotes international mobility and study periods abroad, recognising the educational value of international experiences within the academic path.
Students interested in international mobility may contact the Academic Coordinator for International Mobility and the Erasmus Coordinator of the Department of Computer Science, who provide support in selecting destinations, preparing study plans, and managing administrative procedures.

The Department of Computer Science is pleased to announce a new initiative developed within the framework of the international collaboration between the Zhongnan University of Economics and Law (Wuhan, China) and Sapienza University of Rome.
Starting from the academic year 2025/2026, our Bachelor’s Degree Programme in Applied Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence will be jointly offered at the Zhongnan University of Economics and Law.
The programme, which admits 100 students per year, provides a solid interdisciplinary foundation in Artificial Intelligence within a broader academic and cultural context. Delivered in collaboration with the partner university in Wuhan, it will offer students valuable opportunities for international mobility, internships, and research in Artificial Intelligence and Computer Science.
